The ecommerce words you will meet when building or running an online store - explained for business owners, not developers.
- WooCommerce
- A free WordPress plugin that turns a WordPress site into an online store.
- Payment gateway
- The service that processes card/UPI payments on your store, e.g. Razorpay, PayU, CCAvenue.
- COD
- Cash on Delivery - a payment option popular in India where the customer pays when the order arrives.
- UPI
- Unified Payments Interface - instant bank-to-bank payments via apps like GPay and PhonePe.
- Cart / checkout
- Where customers review items and pay. Checkout optimisation directly affects how many orders you complete.
- SKU
- Stock Keeping Unit - a unique code for each product variant you sell.
- Inventory
- Your product stock levels and management across the store.
- Shipping integration
- Connecting your store to couriers (Delhivery, BlueDart, India Post) for rates, labels and tracking.
- Catalogue
- Your full product list, organised by categories and variants.
- Conversion rate
- The percentage of visitors who complete a purchase or enquiry.
- B2B
- Business-to-business selling, often with wholesale pricing and bulk ordering.
- D2C
- Direct-to-consumer - selling straight to customers rather than through retailers.
- Marketplace
- A platform where multiple vendors sell, e.g. Amazon-style setups with vendor dashboards and payment splits.
- PWA
- Progressive Web App - a website that can be installed and work offline like an app, without app-store approval.
- Abandoned cart
- A customer who adds items but leaves before paying. Recovery emails and better checkout reduce this.
