Web design vs web development: what you actually need
Design decides how it looks and feels. Development decides whether it works. Most small businesses need both, and they are not interchangeable.
These two get confused constantly, usually because agencies sell them as a package and clients buy the cheaper half. The distinction is simple and worth being clear about. Design is deciding what the page looks like, where things sit, and how it feels to use, usually delivered as Figma files. Development is turning those files into a working site with real content, real data, real forms and real speed. A beautiful Figma file is a plan, not a website. A site built without a plan works but feels accidental. Both failures are expensive and both are common.
What each one actually includes| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| Design covers | Wireframes, visual design for desktop and mobile, typography and colour systems, component libraries, interaction states and error states, and a clickable prototype to validate before build. |
| Development covers | HTML, CSS and JavaScript, CMS theming, responsive behaviour, forms and validation, integrations and APIs, performance work, accessibility, security headers, and deployment with analytics and Search Console. |
| The seam between them | Handoff. A designer exports Figma and a developer rebuilds from it. This is where fidelity is usually lost. Teams that work in the same file, or that review each other's work, keep far more of the design intent. |
Why one without the other fails
- Design without development You end up with a beautiful mock-up and an estimate that assumes everything on screen is simple. Form validation, empty states, error handling and real content are where the budget surprise lives.
- Development without design The site works, and it feels like a form. Conversion suffers, and redoing the layout later means redoing the CSS as well as the markup.
- The most common failure Buying a design, then handing the Figma file to a cheaper developer who rebuilds it cheaply. The result looks nothing like the design and nobody is accountable.
How to decide what you need
- You need design if The site exists or is being rebuilt and the visual direction is unclear, or you are changing positioning and the current look undermines it.
- You need development if You have approved designs and need a working site, or you have a WordPress or Laravel site that needs new functionality.
- You need both if You are starting fresh. This is the normal case for a new business site, and it is cheaper to get both from one team than to coordinate two.
- You need neither yet if The site is live and performing. Then you need maintenance, not a rebuild. See our maintenance cost guide.

| Fixed price after a written scope | We agree what is included, what is explicitly out of scope, and the timeline, then quote a single number. You are not billed open hours, and you can see exactly what the money buys before committing. |
| No discovery invoice you did not expect | The first conversation and a short written summary are free. If a project needs a full audit before it can be scoped, we say so and quote that separately rather than folding it into the build. |
| Stage payments against milestones | Typically a deposit, a payment at design or build milestone, and a balance on launch. You see the staging site from the first week, so progress is visible rather than reported. |
| You own everything on handover | Code, design files, content, domain and hosting accounts are yours and named in writing. No hostage situation at renewal. |
| We will tell you when not to buy it | If the right answer is a ₹40,000 WordPress site rather than the custom platform you asked about, that is what we will say. It is cheaper for both of us than a project nobody wanted. |
Questions worth asking before you buy anything like this
- Are these prices fixed quotes? No, they are bands, and the honest reason is that two projects with the same name can differ by a factor of three. What we do is quote a single fixed number for a single written scope, so you know what you are paying before you commit.
- Why do you publish prices at all? Because refusing to talk about money wastes your time and ours. Most people shopping for a website are comparing against other quotes and need a reference point. A published band is more useful than a vague ‘it depends’ and, in our experience, it also qualifies better search traffic.
- What would make this cheaper? Fewer features, fewer pages, and a clearer decision about what the site actually has to do. A site that does one thing well on mobile beats a site that does five things poorly, and it costs less to build.
- What would make it more expensive? Undecided scope, a requirement discovered in month three, and integrations with systems that were never documented. All three are cheaper to fix before the build starts than after.
- Do you offer payment plans or staged billing? Yes. Deposits with milestone payments are standard. For longer projects, staged billing across months is normal and should be in the contract.

FAQs
What is the difference between web design and web development?
Design is the visual and interaction plan, delivered as Figma files. Development is the build that turns those files into a working, fast, accessible site with real content and integrations.
Can I hire a designer only?
Yes, but budget for a developer afterward. Figma files need an experienced build, and the cost of that build should be agreed before the design is signed off, not after.
Which one should a small business start with?
Both, in sequence. For a typical small business site the design is 25 to 40% of the project cost and the development is the rest. A design-only engagement leaves you with nothing live.
How much does web design cost versus development?
For a full site, design is roughly 25 to 40% of total project cost. Design and UX detail is on our design pricing page.
Do designers and developers need to be the same person?
Not for a small project, but they should talk. The most common quality failure in agency work is a handoff with no conversation. One team or a tight collaboration between the two avoids it.
